What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the art of healthy living.  It literally means “Science of Life”. Ayurvedic principles encourage us to take charge of our own life. These principles are very ancient and time tested and are just as applicable today in our lives as they were when they were originally formulated in India over 5000 years ago.

The Ayurvedic approach to life involves listening to and addressing the unique needs of our body, recognizing and balancing our mental and emotional states and deepening our connection with our spirit and our essential self. We alone can do this; we can truly benefit by establishing such a connection or suffer due to our neglect.

Ayurveda recognizes five elements, i.e. space, air, fire, water and earth, and the three main energies (also known as vata, pitta and kapha Doshas) that are derived from these elements. These energies combine in limitless ways to create a unique combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics – resulting in our individual constitution.

An imbalance of the Doshas caused by improper diet/lifestyle, stress, and environmental factors can result in health problems. When one becomes aware of these qualities within oneself, one takes the first steps toward creating a healthy life-style. By working with the body’s unique nature, we are able to create true health.

Ayurveda uses proper diet, a balanced lifestyle and herbs to bring these disturbed doshas back to their natural balance and restores health.
